mama - what's your favourite part of halloween?
faz - dressing up. you get to pick out a costume. i'm going to be a which-what-who monster. don't worry, it's not scary. i made a cute mask.
mama - do you have any advice for pumpkin carvers?
faz - be careful. use basic shapes. don't draw anything smaller than your thumb. use a saw like on a swiss army knife. it works better.
mama - what is on your jack-o-lantern?
faz - a big lightning bolt and a zombie.

in the rain
mama needed to mail some stuff. so we tried orienteering. daddy and i made a map of the neighbourhood. i drew a different shape for every special place we would find. i rode my scooter and made punches with the hole punch when i found the spots. one place was the coffee shop, mama bought me a foamy milk with chocolate drizzle.

daddy: if you mean what i think you mean, it's one of the mysteries of music, and what really drives musical development. you could play an instrument in a new way, or invent a new instrument.
faz: but what about sounds that are impossible to make?

faz: but there are sounds that aren't people or computer sounds. like the wind. you can't make that. how do those sounds work?

monday
i missed having communion at church on sunday. so today i scooted with mama and dae-dae to victoria park. we went to the woods and had communion. i want to start my own church outside.

today we were looking at the 20th century art book. i like asking "what makes this art?". i like hearing the descriptions of how the artist made the art. i don't like abstracts. photographs are not art. piles of junk are not art. art is supposed to be paintings, drawings and sculptures.
for me i want to make sculptures with no model or plan. i want to just start and make a wooden sculpture with all that scrap wood in our garage.

daddy - so you are a manatee. exactly how big are you?
faz - as big, well i'm a baby one but normal ones are as big as your vaaaaan.
daddy - as big as our van, wow. and what do you eat?
faz - sea plants.
daddy - mmmm, sea plants, that sounds tasty. those must be hard on your teeth.
faz - look at this here! it's a ship! uh-oh, there's a propeller on it!
daddy - a propeller on the ship, oh no!
faz - waaaayyyuuuuuhhhh!
daddy - you're acting agitated. is that propeller somehow dangerous to you?
faz - well, propellers on boats can kill manatees. they can chop right through you.
daddy - oh my goodness. that's terrible. thanks for letting us know, manatee. is there anything else we should know about you?
faz - weeeeellll, my flippers have little fingernails on them.
daddy - they do? i never would have imagined that. wowzers.
faz - so we can grab stuff with our flippers.
daddy - hey, you seem to spend your life underwater, but you need to come up to breathe. how do you sleep?
faz - well, you see we open up our nostrils, put them up over the water and then we go to sleep.
daddy - and then you go to sleep with your nostrils above the water. that's great!
faz - like this! mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. like that!
daddy - thanks manatee. is there anything else you want to say before we go?
faz - well. . . we do make great rides! ha!

cody (my teacher) was not at swimming class today and some things were different. and i floated on my back on the flutterboard. and i fell in the water three times.
